SHANGHAI, China, June 6 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/  -- Shanghai Office & Shanghai Odyssey Travel Co. Ltd. announced today that 150 thousand foreign tourists visited Tibet in the year 2001. This figure increases approximately 5 percent every year.

On the mainland, an increasing number of tour companies are offering increasingly varied opportunities to explore this exotic and enchanting land.

The "Tibet Travel Experts" derived from Tibet Tourism Bureau Shanghai Office and Shanghai Odyssey Travel Co., Ltd. now offers 3 packages this year to meet different tourists' tastes. They may choose a six day flexible and easy Lhasa tour is suitable for people more interested in culture and society. Next, those participants who are want more diversity may choose a multiple city tour. People can experience the Tibetan culture and acclimate to the atmosphere at their own pace. In addition, 'outdoors-men' on the 9-day Classical and Namtso Lake camping tour will allow tourists to visit famous places such as Gyantse and Shigatse. Many find one of the most exciting aspects of this particular tour is that participants will hike to Namtso Lake and camp beside it. During the Shoton Festival (30th day of the sixth Tibetan month, or August 4, 2005 as when), a 6-day group tour of Tsedang. The word "shoton" in Tibetan means "the banquet of enjoying yoghurt." During this centuries old festival, people enjoy traditional performances and opera.

With a rapidly advancing transportation system, Tibet is open and readily accessible to the rest of the world. By air, there are 4 flights per day from Chengdu to Lhasa. Beijing and Xi'an also offer the direct flights to Lhasa. The Qinghai-Tibet railroad is under construction and will be open to traffic by 2007. Passengers who travel to Tibet by train will be treated to breathtaking never before seen views of the western countryside.

Tibet is also increasingly accessible by motorized vehicle. There are more than 20,000 kilometers of paved road in Tibet. Roads between Lhasa and Shannan prefecture, Lhasa and Gyantse, Lhasa and Shigatse, Lhasa and Naqu, Lhasa and Namtso all had been or will be improved as paved road. Dilapidated roads will be repaved. As a result, tour vehicles can maneuver more easily. Also, accommodations currently better than ever before.
