Move to replace directional signs to Niagara Falls

28 March, 2007

Tourists heading for Niagara Falls, other local attractions and Niagara city’s parking lots would be directed by new signs if the proposals by a volunteer committee materialise.

The Niagara Falls Tourism Advisory Board is currently considering two plans to put up new signs throughout Niagara city in an attempt to direct tourists toward the Niagara Falls and its surroundings by the summer of 2007.

The city of Niagara has invited bids to replace two signs on Pine Avenue at the corners of Main and Third streets. The signs currently direct drivers to the Niagara Falls down Main Street, but the Niagara Falls Tourism Advisory Board wants tourists to be directed down Third Street near the Aquarium of Niagara and other local businesses.

The Niagara City Council had a month earlier approved a tourism budget that set aside $5,000 of Niagara city’s hotel occupancy taxes to pay for new signs.

The Niagara Falls Tourism Advisory Board is also exploring ways to put up seven new directional signs that would depict the falls and direct the tourists from Niagara Falls Boulevard to downtown Niagara Falls municipal parking lots. The signs would also guide tourists to the Pine Avenue ‘Little Italy’ neighborhood and other areas.

The members of the Niagara Falls Tourism Advisory Board believe that putting up new signs would enhance traffic to the city’s parking lots.

The Niagara Falls Tourism Advisory Board is also working independently on a project headed by the state agency USA Niagara Development Corporation to make what it calls a ‘comprehensive wayfinding system’ that will direct tourists to attractions within the downtown areas of the Niagara city. The USA Niagara project aims at reducing and refining the number of signs directing drivers in tourist areas of Niagara city.

The USA Niagara Development Corporation project, which is scheduled to be completed in 2007, is part of a $3.4-million project to replace signs in the downtown area and rebuild Old Falls Street.
