ECOTOURISM

Global Ecotourism Conference in Oslo in May 2007

First-ever global meet on ecotourism will review and celebrate achievements and assess challenges.

19 April, 2007

The first-ever Global ecotourism Conference will be held in Oslo, capital of Norway, froms May 14 to 16, 2007.

The Global Ecotourism Conference is being organised by the International Ecotourism Society (TIES), ecotourism Norway, and The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The International Ecotourism Society will be partnering with a national or regional ecotourism association for this conference every five years starting 2007.

The Global Ecotourism Conference 2007 would be the first major global conference on ecotourism since the United Nation’s International Year of ecotourism in 2002. The conference, its organisers say, will review and celebrate the achievements in the ecotourism sector as well as assess the challenges facing the industry.

The conference is expected to bring together national and regional ecotourism associations and networks from around the world, besides other organisations and individuals interested in ecotourism. Discussion will be held on common issues and on ways to strengthen the collective voice of the ecotourism community.

The Global ecotourism Conference 2007 targets ecotourism professionals and practitioners – people who are involved in ecotourism in a variety of ways either full-time or part-time. They include officers of national and regional ecotourism associations, non-governmental organisations, owners of ecotourism business, national and local governments, park and protected area services, academics, host communities, and groups of indigenous peoples.

There will be a special networking meeting for representatives on May 14, before the conference officially opens.
