New Yahoo Web Messenger launched
IMs get easier on Yahoo!
3 May, 2007
Instant messaging has got a lot
easier, thanks to Yahoo!’s latest
innovation. The company has begun
offering a web-based version of its
Instant Messenger (IM) that works
inside a web browser.
Nearly 46 percent of Web users in
India log on from Internet cafes. And,
globally, Yahoo! comes in at second
position in terms of Instant Messaging
services, with approximately 88.5
million IM users worldwide.
The new offering, said reports, would
completely do away with installation
of a separate software programme. It
added that the service would prove
beneficial to people on the move. The
Yahoo! web-based IM service is
available in India, Brazil, Malaysia,
the Philippines, USA, and Vietnam. The
service will soon be available in more
countries in a year’s time.
Besides just offering the chat
windows, the Yahoo! web-based instant
messenger would also help in archiving
previous conversations. This apart,
the service will allow users to manage
10 or more simultaneous conversations
in just one IM window, the reports
added.
With the realization that many people
are currently restricted by their
companies from using IMs, the new
service takes the chat options wider
and easier. True, there is some
opportunity - but the subdomain
webmessenger.yahoo.com is also easy to
block for a network administrator - so
don't automatically assume that your
IM-ing woes are over.
Yahoo! sees an opportunity in the new
service as a possible intersection
between social networking web sites
and real-time IM communications, the
reports pointed out. You can access
