But, Palm Pre itself doesnt need to be connected – To the Palm Pre wireless, just keep the smartphone either above or near the Touchstone charging pod. The Touchstone will start charging the Palm Pre battery once its near the magnetic field of the Touchstone.
How does wireless battery charging work on Palm Pre?
The technology used in wireless battery charging has been in use for sometime. However, the Palm Pre mobile phone will be the first mobile phone to come with an optional wireless charger called the Touchstone. The Touchstone dock creates a magnetic field with electricity, and these oscillations are transmitted to the Palm Pre mobile phone. The magnetic field generates electricity within the Palm Pre with built-in magnets, which is used to power up the Palm Pre battery.
Benefits and features of wireless battery charging in Palm Pre
The Palm Pre mobile phone can be wirelessly charged by keeping the mobile on the dock of the Touchstone or near it. The battery charges better andd faster the closer it is to the Touchstone. This is because the magnetic field of the charging dock loses power with distance. Wireless battery charging is said to be about 10% less efficient than normal wired battery charging. The Touchstone dock will still needs to be connected into a wall socket for electricity.
A few months back back, chipmaker Intel had displayed wireless charging of a light bulb at the IDF. Despite their conveniences, wireless battery charging powered gadgets is yet to gain followers. The Wireless Power Consortium, jointly promoted by Philips, Sanyo and others is attempting to create uniform standards into the wireless battery charging initiatives, so that the same wireless charging device (like a Touchstone) can be deployed to charge multiple batteries for varying devices in the future.

The Touchstone will take about four hours to fully charge a Palm Pre battery wirelessly, news websites reported. Palm is yet to release features on the Touchstone. The wireless charging dock will be offered as an optional accessory with the Palm Pre, with a price of $69.99.
The Palm Pre may take some time to come to India. In the US, the Palm Pre mobile phone will be initially launched on the Sprint Nextel telecom network. Sprint hopes to gain more customers with the launch of the Palm Pre on its network. Sprint had lost many subscribers in the last quarter while rivals gained in subscribers.It is expected that in the not-so distant future, wireless charging devices like the Touchstone will gradually eliminate conventional wired charging. Wireless charging could be of use in topping up power in a wide variety of mobile phones, laptops, plug-in hybrid cars and more.
