Wikipedia to launch search engine

14 May, 2007

The founder of Wikipedia, the world's leading online encyclopedia, Jimbo Wales is all out with a new mission. Jimbo Wales plans to launch an open source search engine. That means unlike Google or Yahoo, the search engine will not be proprietary.

Following the Wikipedia path, the new search engine that Jimbo Wales unveils will be available in Indian languages too.

The search tool will be at search.wikia.com, and if all goes well the first version of the search engine from Wikipedia will go live by this year end. Wales also expects to hire community managers from India and to source operations from India, as and when the business expands.

Wales said he sees India as an interesting IT market and said he hoped the Indian component of this search engine will evolve together with the development of his search engine.
