Android 2.1 (also known as Flan) may make its debut with the HTC Hero. Some HTC Hero screenshot with the Android 2.1 interface have been leaked on the web. It won't be surprising if HTC is the first to go for Android 2.1 in the next version of the popular HTC Hero, since this is the company that first started making Android phones.

Android 1.6 phones get Google Maps Navigation

Google Maps Navigation for Android 1.6 phones has been launched. Google Maps Navigation, which was launched last month, is currently available only for Android 2.0 (Android Eclair). And the only phone running Android 2.0 is Motorola Droid.

The first ever Google Android 2.0 phone was launched recently by Motorola. The Motorola Droid runs Android 2.0 OS, codenamed Eclair, and so fas has been a major hit in the US for Verizon, despite some digs by piqued Palm. A quarter million people have already bought the Motorola Droid, and the consensus so far is that it is at least as good - if not  better - than the latest iPhone 3GS. Take that, Apple!

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10, the first Android phone from Sony Ericsson has been announced. Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 will run Android 1.6, though it is expected that later, an Android 2.0 Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 will follow. Sony Ericsson has not announced the price of the latest Android offering, the XPERIA X10. (Updated 15 Jan, 2010: Xperia X10 will run Android 2.0 - and there is the chance that it may run 2.1)

Verizon has recently been the center of a lot of attention due to the hype surrounding its upcoming Motorola Droid smartphone. Some pre-production samples were made available to some blogs to review and they reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. The phone has been hyped so much, that Verizon's stock price went up just on the bases of the positive early reviews. And they seem to have put the crosshairs directly on iPhone with their 'iDont' spoof ad campaign.
