Sony Vaio W, the cheap netbook from Sony is on sale. The Sony Vaio netbook comes after Sony tried not to get into the “cheap laptop” market for quite some time. Already netbooks, which are cheaper laptops with lighter system configuration, command a major share of laptop sales, and Sony couldn’t afford to stay away from the netbook game for long. Hence the Sony Vaio W. Sony calls the Vaio W netbook “a chic new line of mini notebooks.”

Sony Vaio W netbook comes at a price tag of $499 in the US. The Sony Vaio W netbook will have a 10 inch screen, an Intel Atom 1.66 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM and Windows XP. The configuration of the Sony Vaio W netbook is similar to other netbooks currently available in the market. There are 2 USB ports, one ethernet jack and card slots for SD cards and Sony memory sticks. The Sony Vaio W netbook has a better screen with higher resolution. The Sony Vaio W netbook will come in three colours – cocoa brown (?), berry pink ((??) and sugar white. The Vaio W is expected to be launched next month. (See photos and pictures). However, the price may be a disappoitment for those looking to buy netbooks, since rival netbooks from Acer and ASUS are available much cheaper – from $300 to $400.

The Sony Vaio W also comes outfitted with a webcam and microphone. W-fi is built in, so you can connect your Sony Vaio W to a wifi hotspot or to your home network. The Vaio W has trademark Sony fit and finish, and the keyboard and touchpad are of high quality. The Sony netbook has a 160-GB hard disk, which is more than enough for a netbook user. The Vaio W also comes preloaded with several photo and video editing software, so you can hit the ground running soon after purchase.

Sony, however, does not pitch the Vaio W as a netbook, possibly fearing brand dilution. Sony terms it a second computer for the household, a fun laptop etc. Sony being Sony, doesnt want to be compared to the liked of Acer and ASUS, even as it tries to avoid being branded a netbook-maker. Though the configuration all but screams Netbook, Sony’s weak attempt to position it as a premium netbook may still win the day with budget buyers oh cheap laptops.
