Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Android phone launched soon

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10, the first Android phone from Sony Ericsson has been announced. Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 will run Android 1.6, though it is expected that later, an Android 2.0 Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 will follow. Sony Ericsson has not announced the price of the latest Android offering, the XPERIA X10. (Updated 15 Jan, 2010: Xperia X10 will run Android 2.0 – and there is the chance that it may run 2.1)

The phone will be launched in early 2010, Sony Ericsson said in a press release. Sony Ercisson preened that the XPERIA X10 will be the first phone to humanize the way people interact with their phones, whatever that means. See photos and pictures of the XPERIA Android phone alongside.

As far as specs go, the Xperia X10 seems to be positioned one level below the recently launched Motorola Droid. The Droid has a slide-out keyboard and a larger screen to go one up on the X10. However, actual user experience can be compared only by using the two phones side by side. Specs are not enough to make that judgement. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Android phone comes at a weight of 135 grams, which is slightly on the heavier side. It has a size (dimensions) of 119 x 63 x 13 mm. The Android  X10 has a built-in phone memory up to 1 GB, and comes with a memory card of 8GB, which is enough to hold a lots of music, videos and pictures.  The  processor is a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250. The phone features the 1.6 version of Android, also called the Android Donut.

The touchscreen phone Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 has a lot of boast about, and this will be the first in a series of high-end phones that Sony Ericsson plans to roll out next year. The GSM/GPRS EDGE phone operates in 3G networks.


The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 has an 8.1 megapixel (8 MP) camera with video capabilities. It comes with autofocus and touch controls. There are also camera features like Intelligent face recognition, Geo tagging , Image and video stabilizer, Photo and video light, Send to web (photo and video upload), Smile detection, Touch focus, Video recording and Recent shot tray. Most of these are features present in high-end cameras today.


The 4.0 inch size capacitive TFT touchscreen on the Android phone XPERIA X10 comes with 262,144 colours and 480 x 854 pixels (WVGA). Sony said on its blog that the touchscreen is scratch-resistant.

Messaging and Music

Messaging features on the XPERIA X10 include Conversations, email, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, Picture messaging (MMS), predictive text input, and garden variety text messaging (SMS). The music capabilities of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Android phone include Album art, Bluetooth stereo, media player, Music tones (MP3/AAC), PlayNow, and TrackID.

Needless to say, the XPERIA X10 from Sony Ericsson comes packed with GPS location finding, WiFi and Bluetooth for communication. For entertainment buffs, the Android X10 comes packed with 3D games, media browser, Infinite button, video streaming, video viewing and YouTube.

Sony Ericsson is also debuting its latest gimmick – what it calls a UX platform –  with the XPERIA X10 Android. Consider it as a way to arrange your social networking and media capabilities on your phone. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 UX platform has two aspects to it – the Timescape and the Mediascape.

Being an Android phone, the Sony XPERIA X10 comes preloaded with the whole load of Google apps for mobile. These include the  Android Market Client, Gmail,  Google Calendar, Google Maps with Street View, Google Media Uploader, Google phone-top search, Google search widget, Google Talk, Google Voice Search, Network Location Provider, Set-up Wizard, Orkut and YouTube. The XPERIA also has other Sony Ericsson apps like Timescape, Mediascape, Sony Ericsson Home with clock widget and Sony Ericsson Sync.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 comes in two colors – sensuous black and luster white.

The GPS functions on the XPERIA X10 include Wisepilot location tracking services and Google Maps. However, Sony says that this may not be available on all countries. The phone features a webkit open source web browser.

The organizer functions of the Android XPERIA include Alarm clock, Calculator, Calendar, Flight mode, Infinite button, Office suite, Phone book with dialer and a World clock.

The XPERIA X10 comes with a standard 3.5 mm audio jack, Bluetooth technology, Micro USB connector, Synchronisation, USB support and Wi-Fi.

Optional accessories for the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 include A Hi-Fi Wireless Headset with FM Radio MW600, Car Charger and a screen protector ET902.
