Most people who download face some problems, sooner or later. The downloaded software cause system crashes, mysterious file disappearances or compatibility problems where some of your old software stops working altogether.
Let us go through the list of software threats to your computer.
Adware and spyware
Adwre and spyware most of the time tricks you into installing them. This happens either because they present a link to the dangerous program, and fool you into clickingon them. Some websites presents windows that pretend to be Windows dialog boxes, and you end up installing the software when you click on what looks like the Cancel button.
Otherwise, this happens when you download some shareware or freeware. The dangerous program is bundled along with your download, and it is installed alongside what you really thought were downloading. Often, legally, the makers of the software are in the clear – they will usually have a long Users’ Agreement in the middle of which they would have mentioned the bundled software, and when you click on yes, they are legally in safe territory. Most users don’t read the Agreement, and they use that loophole.
Once installed, the spyware can transmit your data personal information or download targeted advertisements, and often, make uninstallation almost impossible. They can also try and take over your browser – easy if it is Internet Explorer. Then you can myriad windows, toolbars altering and re-altering your browser settings and sending data to unknown locations.
Viruses and worms
Virus writers exploit human vulnerabilities as much as security flaws in your computers. Most viruses spread when an infected file is sent unknowingly by someone through email, and people click them out of habit, causing the executable software to install and do its work.
Normally, as long as you stick to reputed download sites, you don’t get viruses. That is because most of those sites check for viruses before they host any new software. Stay away from sites that are not reputable, and as a rule, do not lcick on attachments others send you.
Worms usually make copies of themselves, and then use your email to transmit themselves to everyone in your address book. This is one reason why one should not trust any software sent by even a close friend – because it could be a worm sending itself to you.
Trojans
A Trojan Horse is a program that infects your computer and allows a hacker somewhere in the world to take control of your computer without you realizing it. A trojan infection can allow total remote access to your computer by someone who may do anything with it. Trojans do not make copies of themselves and send themselves through emails – so usually, you have a Trojan because you downloaded it. Most of the new antivirus software can destroy the Trojans and identify them as you download. Often, programs which others send you may be a Trojan without them realizing it. The program may pretend to do something, while doing its real business behind the scenes.
Tomorrow we will look at the different anti-virus packages available, and some downloading tips to keep you safe.
