Seagate has begun to ship the GoFlex Slim portable hard drive, which at 9mm thickness is the world’s slimmest portable, external hard drive.

The 2.5-inch notebook hard drive is roughly the width of a pencil and can fit into a pocket or purse easily. Not only is it light on your pocket, but also your wallet, carrying a price tag of $100.

The GoFlex Slim is targeted to go with ultraslim laptops and notebook computers that have limited storage capacity because of their size. It comes in only one storage capacity value – 320GB.

Equipped with a 7200RPM drive and a USB 3.0 interface to accelerate transfer speeds up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0, this attractive super–slim drive delivers quick access to large, multimedia files such as HD movies and video games. Also see: Western Digital 3TB USB 3.0 HDDs

The faster drive speed takes advantage of the included plug-and-play USB 3.0 interface, while still maintaining compatibility with USB 2.0 ports. Seagate GoFlex Slim portable drive also allows for use between Windows and Mac computers, interchangeably, without formatting or performance loss.

Seagate’s slim and sleek hard drive comes with backup software that provides automatic and continuous backups for your laptop’s content and encrypts files and folders. It is fully compatible with Apple’s Time Machine backup software also.

Seagate has also said that it will release a special Mac version of the hard drive in May. It would be white in color and will be preformatted using HFS+. It would feature a software to grant access to Windows-based computers also. Also see: Samsung EcoGreen hard drive for desktop computers

Seagate GoFlex Slim was first announced at the CES 2011 in January and has been released only in the United States for now. The company has not given any information on when its new hard drive will hit the Indian markets or at what price. We expect Seagate’s ultraslim hard drive to be priced around Rs. 5,000 in India.

“The continued growth of personal digital media stores, our increasingly mobile lifestyles and the continued proliferation of mobile devices are driving the demand for slimmer, more portable storage solutions,” said Patrick Connolly, vice president and general manager of Retail at Seagate, at the launch of GoFlex Slim.

“Netbooks and slim laptops are great for consuming media, but are limited when it comes to creating and storing high-definition films and photos. With the benefit of using Seagate’s Momentus Thin drive, the 9mm GoFlex Slim ultra-portable hard drive breaks through these boundaries — delivering a beautiful, ultraslim, lightweight storage solution to complement existing mobile computing devices so they can enjoy even more of the content they love, anywhere they want.”
