Samsung SGH-X820, the thinnest mobile phone in the world, was unveiled in Moscow yesterday. The Samsung Samsung SGH-X820 beats the Samsung T509, which has till now been the thinnest model from Samsung.
The Samsung Samsung SGH-X820 houses, in 6.9 cm width, an MP3 player, a two megapixel camera, 80MB of memory, video recording and Bluetooth connectivity. The phone is as thin as an iPod Nano, and packs in powerful features. The Samsung Samsung SGH-X820 weighs barely 66 grams.
The Samsung Samsung SGH-X820 will reach European shops this month, and China in June. According to Samsung, the company is still to decide whether to launch a CDMA version of the Samsung Samsung SGH-X820, which will make it marketable in the US too. About three-quarters of mobile phone sales in the world are from the GSM category and the rest from CDMA.
Said a Samsung official: "Technologically, it is not a big deal to adapt the formula of the slim model CDMA but its commercial viability is the issue."
The Samsung Samsung SGH-X820 takes its inspiration from the Motorola Razr, which has been a huge hit across the globe due to its thin, sleek design. Samsung hopes to replicate the Motorazr success with the
Samsung SGH-X820.
The company has not revealed the price of the SGH-X200 so far. It is expected to be priced in the same range as the Razr.
Samsung officials claimed that the latest mobilephone has finally crossed the 7mm thickness barrier. The iPod Nano is 6.85 mm in thickness. Despite its ultra-thin body, the Samsung SGH-X820 is not short of applications, and houses practically all functions of its class. The bar-type phone is the latest in Samsung's attempt to progressively trim down its range of phones.
Its is not clear when the Samsung Samsung SGH-X820 will be available in India and other Asian countries outside China.
