The W799 looks decidedly old-fashioned at one look – but it has two touchscreens, one internal and one external. Both have the same resolution – 240×400 on 3 inch screens. The new Samsung phone runs its widget touch interface TouchWiz – but not possibly on a Windows Mobile OS running underneath. The OS is more likely to be Samsung’s proprietary OS. So this is not a smartphone.
The clamshell / flip W799 phone features support for CDMA2000 1x EV-DO 800/1900 MHz and tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz networks.
Chinese buyers of the Samsung W799 will also get handwriting support, a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, BlueTooth, GPS, TV-Out… hey wait a minute, are we sure this is not running WinMo 6.5 underneath after all? Those specs looks substantial. The answer still is – unlikely. The featurephone market in China is huge compared to the market for smartphones.
There is no information yet on the price of the mobile phone in China. We wish we knew. This looks like a great phone for the Indian market too.
