Samsung SHW-M100S first Android 2.1 phone launched

Samsung has revealed its first Android 2.1 phone, the Samsung SHW-M100S, at a media event held on February 4, 2010.Details are thin on the ground about the phone’s specifications or the price at which it will be available. From the single photo of the SHW-M100S we have below, the phone follows the normal design direction of Samsung smartphones.

unwiredview has reported that the Samsung SHW-M100S smartphone will be available only in South Korea, when it is launched in March 2010 via SK Telecom.

The Samsung SHW-M100S smartphone comes with a 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED touch screen and Samsung’s latest TouchWiz user interface. The Google Nexus One also comes with an AMOLED screen for brighter colors.

It is powered by an 800MHz processor and is equipped with a 5-megapixel camera with 720p video recording capability, Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS, DivX playback, 3.5mm headset jack, and T-DMB.

The Samsung SHW-M100S will offer access to Android market and Social Networking Service.

At the press conference, Shin Jong-kyun, Mobile division chief, Samsung Electronics, said that Samsung plans to sell more than 18 million handsets this year, up from six million in 2009, koreatimes has reported.

Shin Jong-kyun also said that Samsung will launch phones based on its proprietary Bada platform, in March 2010.

The Android 2.1 SDK was released on January 12, 2010.

In January 2010, Google launched its HTC Nexus One smartphone running the Android 2.1 operating system.

The smartphone showcased software improvements that are part of the Android 2.1 OS, such as voice-to-text capability, upgrades to the UI, and new Google Earth app for mobile phones. Android 2.1 also has the Google Maps turn by turn Voice navigation feature, but this may not be available in South Korea.

Google had indicated that other phones running Android would be able to offer the software upgrades running on the Nexus One, when they upgrade to Android 2.1.
