ROBOTICS

Robots that use guess work for complex navigation in development

17 May, 2007

Robots that use guesswork as a means of navigation are being developed by a team of researchers in the US. Guesswork comes into play when the robots encounter places unfamiliar to them and have to navigate through places that they haven't been to.

Robots will create maps of the environments that they have seen in the past and will use this information to predict and navigate through the unfamiliar circumstances. It is learnt that the tests which were conducted in office buildings yielded good results.

Some robots use the technology of SLAM (simultaneous localisation and mapping), which is a technique of mapping the current environment using various sensors at the same time keeping a track of the current position.

Since the SLAM technology was prone to errors and also takes a great deal of time to do precise navigation, this method was not widely accepted.

The new guesswork robots use a complex algorithm to find out the route using a map of the areas that they have visited and using a problem solving technique to find our the exact route.
