Thanks to a continuous decline in their prices over the last few years, all-in-one/multifunction printers – equipped with printing, copying and scanning, (and in some cases, faxing as well) capabilities – have now become more than affordable for many individual home users and small offices. Any by affordable, we mean a printer not worth more than Rs. 5,000.
So for those of you–home users, as well as small- and medium-sized businesses–looking for a not-too-expensive MFP, Canon’s recently launched PIXMA MP287 model in India, we believe, merits serious consideration.
Priced at Rs. 4,295, this inkjet color printer, like its peers in the PIXMA series, delivers good quality photo outputs and more-than-decent standard text printouts–apart from being equipped with copying and scanning capabilities.
What really sets the Canon MP287 apart from similarly priced PIXMA inkjet printers currently available in the country? Hmm, consider this–you recorded those cherished moments of a get-together of your buddies from college held recently in your full high-definition (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) Canon digital camera, and now want to print out one delectable clip to send it across to friends.
Bingo, the Canon PIXMA MP287 all-in-one printer will do the job; all one has to do is open the full HD movie file on his PC/laptop, choose that desired individual frame and give the print command. And guess, what the movie clip is printed out!
But it’s worth mentioning here that this functionality is restricted to video captured on Canon digicams only.
Another USP of the Canon PIXMA MP287 is a so-called ‘Flickr Integration Photo Print’ tool that lets users import their pictures directly from Flickr and print them. Instant gratification, you see!
Canon has also packed a suite of its proprietary software into the all-in-one printer, including ‘Auto Photo Fix II’ (for optimizing brightness of unexposed areas of an image) and ‘Easy-WebPrint EX’ (for printing your customized layout in multiple ways after aggregating and editing several web pages).
This all in one / multifunction inkjet printer is good enough for cranking out prints of pictures, invitations and other types of high-resolution material, as it uses Canon’s latest ChromaLife100+ color inks to render a resolution of up to 4,800 x 1,200 dots per inches (dpi) for color prints (usually, the more dots a printer can squeeze into a square inch, the sharper the output is).
On the interface front, there is a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port that allows users to plug in pen drives and other external drives for quick printing.
The scanner in the Canon Pixma MP287 printer can scan documents up to A4 size, with output resolution decent enough (1,200 x 2,400 dpi) for practical purposes. And to make this activity user friendly, Canon is providing an ‘Auto Scan Mode via MP Navigator EX’ software which automates all document detection, cropping, scanning and saving tasks.
There is another preinstalled app, called OCR (Optical Character Recognition), which works with the scanner to translate printed characters into digital text, allowing you to search for or edit files in a word processing program.
The Canon PIXMA MP287 all-in-one printer is touted to churn out almost 2.6 color copies per minute, with the First Color Copy Out Time estimated to be 37 seconds.
Measuring 450 x 335 x 153mm and weighing 5.5kg, the AIO device comes with a 100-sheet input tray at the rear and a self-opening output tray (helps prevent paper jams) at the front. This paper handling capacity should be more than adequate for small offices or individuals working from home. If you are not going to use the MP287 for a significant period of time, then you can simply fold both the retractable trays, thus clearing up space.
Sporting a sleek design with a shining black chassis, the Canon PIXMA MP287 multifunction / all-in-one printer is quite attractive looking. On the right end of the device, you will find a 7-segment LED control panel that can display up to 99–meaning, one can select as many as 99 copies from the monitor.
Fast print speed is something one should not expect from this color inkjet MFP. This all in one printer model has a theoretical maximum print speed of 8.4 pages per minute (black-and-white) and 4.8 ppm (color).
The lack of any direct print ports such as PictBridge, as well as absence of memory card slots, mean that one has to go through the PC route before getting his hands on printouts–this, even though the device boasting photo printing functionalities!
Other major drawbacks include no Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or any duplex (double-sided printing on the same paper) feature. Last but not the least, you won’t get an automatic document feeder (ADF) – so be ready to manually feed paper into the input tray (no multitasking here, folks).
The printer comes with one standard capacity black cartridge (Rs. 995) and one standard capacity tri-color (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow) consumable, priced at Rs. 1,355.
According to Techtree.com, the monochrome ink cartridge has a yield of 304 pages, translating into a cost per page (CPP) of Rs. 3.27 (CPP = Price of cartridge/yield). On the other hand, the tri-color cartridge is said to deliver a yield of 220 pages, equating to a CPP of Rs. 6.15.
This is something you should keep in mind, as the running costs for the PIXMA MP287 could drain quite a hole in your pocket–particularly if the print volume is high.
Lack of features such as network connectivity , duplexing, ADF and fast print speed is something small offices will have to keep in mind, as far as buying the PIXMA MP287 is concerned. But then, they should factor in the really cheap price tag – Rs. 4,295 – of the printer which can print, copy and scan documents. From an individual home user’s point of view, the rather high cost per page is one factor to watch out for – that apart, you can hardly complain with you what get from this inkjet MFP!
