Philips launches Cinema 21:9 TV in India

Philips has revealed the industry’s first 21:9 movie format TV in India. The Philips Cinema 21:9 Platinum Series should be available in stores by next year at the price of around Rs. 4-5 lakhs.

The Philips Cinema 21:9  Platinum TV comes in diagonal screen size of 58 inches. It’s pretty big measuring 1,459 mm X 668 mm X 71 mm and weighs 26 kgs.

The main selling point of Philips Cinema 21:9 is that its screen size is optimized for watching movies. While most movies are shot in 21:9 aspect ratio (21 horizontal units to 9 vertical units), most flat panel displays come with an aspect ratio of 16:9.

When we view a 21:9 format movie on a 16:9 TV, the overall picture size is reduced to make it fit. So we encounter black bars on the top or bottom while watching the picture. But Philips Cinema 21:9 HDTV projects the perfect original movie as seen on a theater screen.

Philips has used this opportunity to load its TV with lots of state-of-the-art features. For instance, it boasts 400 Hz refresh rate — most good TVs stop at 240 Hz. Similarly, a response time of just 0.5 ms is a big improvement over first-generation LCDs that tout 5 ms response time.

Philips Cinema 21:9 also wraps Ambilight Spectra 3 technology. The Ambilight 3 Spectra widens the screen and disperses the color to the three sides of the wall. Whatever the color of the wall may be, the wall-adaptive function ensures that the color of the light always matches the picture .This technology, patented by Philips, enhances the viewing experience by creating a nice contrast between the picture on the screen and its surroundings.

Other nifty features include options to download content from the Web and replaying TV content of your choice. Another bit of techno-wizardry — Multi-view — lets you watch the TV and surf the Internet simultaneously. The Wi-Fi Media Connect helps to share files, videos, and pictures from your PC to Philips Cinema 21:9 HDTV.

For any TV to claim “leading edge” title, 3D is a must. So Philips Cinema 21:9 gets it. Also see: 3D TV models in India

In all, Philips Cinema 21:9 is a pretty compelling option for movie buffs. We mean movie buffs with deep, deep pockets.
