Panasonic’s 3D HDTV TC-PVT25 was awarded the “Best of Show” and “Best in Television” category at the fifth annual Consumer Electronics Show 2010 at Las Vegas. The People’s Voice award went to Intel Wireless Display and nine companies were selected for having the best products in their respective categories.

3D technology was definitively the theme of this year’s show with the consumer technology companies coming up with an array of products catering to 3D technology. Despite the 3D technology being in its nascent stage, the editors CNET, who judged the devices on the show for the award, felt that the next generation will be the 3D generation.

“Although it has many detractors, the same arguments against 3D technology – cost, lack of content, cumbersome technology and standards issues – Are similar to those that clouded the emergence of color TV and HDTV. We may not see a 3D TV in homes this year or next, but it will be some day in the future,” said Scott Ard, Editor-in-Chief, after selecting Panasonic 3D TV VT25 as the best of the show.

Among the number of 3D-compatible HDTVs launched at the show, the Panasonic TC-PVT25 is likely to be the first to hit the market. The company’s press release claimed a “spring release”. The 3D TV will come with the necessary pair of 3D glasses.

The Panasonic TC-PVT25 is the successor to the company’s TC-PV10 series, which was the only HDTV to earn an Editors’ Choice from CNET’s TV reviewers last year. This time, the PVT25 3D TV claims improved black-level performance and better picture quality.

The awards were given on the basis of a few criteria: the company should pioneer a new category, establish an emerging category or take an existing category to a new level. It should also excite people with its style, innovation, usefulness, ease of use and capability to entertain.

The nine categories in which awards were given included digital photo and video; car tech and GPS; cell phones and smart phones; computers and hardware; gaming; home theater; MP3 and video players; televisions; and a new “green tech” category which recognises environment-friendly consumer electronics and technology.

The nine category winners of CES 2010 include:
Car Tech and GPS: Ford myFord Touch interface
Cell Phones and smart phones: Motorola Backflip
Computers and hardware: Lenovo IdeaPad U1 Hybrid
Digital photo and video: Eye-Fi Pro X2
Gaming: Dell Alienware M11x
Green: Tenrehte Technologies Picowatt smart plugs
Home theater: LG BD590
MP3 and video players: Valups Tivit
