Palm Pre wireless charging Touchstone soon

Palm Pre wireless charging Touchstone, the dock for wireless battery charging of Palm Pre is in the works. The small puckish-shaped Touchstone will help you charge you charge your Palm Pre in a wireless manner, without wires.

Without wires? Not fully? The charging pad Touchstone is still connected to a wall socket with a  wire. To wireless-charge the Palm Pre, keep the smartphone on or near the Touchstone. The touchstone will charge the Palm Pre’s built-in battery wirelessly.

How does Palm Pre Touchstone Wireless Charging work?

Wireless charging has been around for long, though Palm Pre will be the mobile phone to ship with an optional Touchstone wireless charger. The Touchstone dock generates a magnetic field which generates oscillations which are transmitted to the Palm Pre. The magnetic field generates electricity within the Palm Pre, which is then used to charge the Palm Pre battery.

The Palm Pre can be charged wirelessly by placing the phone on the Touchstone dock or near it. The closer the Palm Pre is to the wireless charger, the faster it charges. In reality, wireless battery charging is about 10% less effective than normal wired charging. The Touchstone dock will still need to be plugged into a wall socket for electricity.

Some time back, Intel demonstrated wireless charging of a light bulb at the IDF. However, wireless charging of battery powered devices is yet to take off in a significant way. The Wireless Power Consortium, promoted, among others by Philips and Sanyo is striving to bring standards into the wireless battery powering mechanism, so that the same wireless charging device (like Touchstone) can be used to charge different batteries in the future.

Palm Pre Touchstone dock price and features

The Palm Pre wireless charger Touchstone will take about four hours to fully charge a Palm Pre battery, news websites reported. The Touchstone can be used to charge only the Palm Pre mobile Phone. It will be offered as an accessory with the Palm Pre for $69.99. Its not clear if the Palm Pre will debut in India. In the US, the Palm Pre will be launched on the Sprint Nextel network. Sprint hopes to garner more customers with the Palm Pre launch. The company lost many subscribers in the last quarter while rivals gained.
It is expected that in the not-so distant future, wireless charging devices like the Touchstone will gradually eliminate conventional wired charging. Wireless charging could be of use in topping up power in a wide variety of mobile phones, laptops, plug-in hybrid cars and more.
