Opera Mini™ for Java mobiles

Opera introduces browser for mobile phones

August 13, 2005: Opera has introduced a new browser for virtually all mobile phones - Opera Mini™, a J2ME ( Java 2 Mobile Edition). Opera is finally bringing mobile internet to the main stream by enabling web acces on more than 700 million low- and mid-tier Java-capable phones around the world.

Opera's mobile browser Opera Mini™, allows users to access the web on mobile phones that would normally be incapable of running a Web browser. This includes the vast majority of today's WAP-enabled phones. The browser uses a remote server to pre-process the page before it is sent to the phone, thus avoiding the need of the phones to process the web pages.

"Mobile Web surfing has until now been limited to more advanced phones that are capable of running a browser," says Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. "With Opera Mini™, the phone only has to run a small Java-client and the rest is taken care of by the remotely located Opera Mini server".

The installation procedure for the browser is quite simple. The users can either send an sms or visit a link through their WAP-enabled phones and they are online.

A significant advantage of using this browser is that operators can dramatically increase the average revenue per user (ARPU) across their entire customer base by stimulating the usage of compelling mobile Web services. Opera offers full customization of Opera Mini™ to companies, for example operators, broadcasters and mobile content providers. The service will also be offered to the Internet industry.

The new Opera Mini™ browser will be first used by Norway's leading commercial television station, TV2."Finally we see how we can generate revenue from real mobile browsing," says Morten Holst, VP Strategy, TV2 Interactive. "By introducing TV2's portal through Opera Mini™ we have combined the best of mobile services with mobile Web access."

Opera Mini™ is available to the end-users through companies and operators which will include the browser as part of their offerings to customers. Opera Mini™ is currently available as a pilot project through TV2 in Norway.
