Olive Telecom has announced an Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone called OliveSmart V-S300. The device uses HSPA+, Bluetooth 2.1, GPS and WiFi b/g. connectivity. The OliveSmart V-S300 has a 4.1 inch capacitive touchscreen, and a 5 mega pixel auto focus camera at the back that can record 720p HD video, as well as a front facing camera for video chats. The phone is powered by a 1GHz Snapdragon MSM8255 processor, has 512 MB of ROM, 2 GB of internal memory that can be expanded to 32 GB via micro SD cards, and 512 MB or RAM. It has surround sound technology and uses a 1400 mAh battery. Olive Telecom hasn’t revealed the OliveSmart’s price, but it is expected to cost about Rs 20,000. We had recently reported on an upcoming 4G Android phone from Olive Telecom.
As of now, we don’t think there are any Android Gingerbread phones in India apart from the V-S300. Several high-end Android phones currently in India are expected to get upgrades to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but that has not actually happened yet. Related: OlivePad Android tablet review
OliveSmart V-S300 Android Gingerbread phone measures about 122 x 66 x 9.9 mm and looks uncannily like ViewSonic’s new Gingerbread smartphone, which too was released at MWC 2011, same as Olive’s device. Both phones have large screens dominating the front and four buttons along the bottom of the device with the one on the extreme left for back, and the right most one for search. You might also want to read our story on Android phones in India or read our mobile phone buyer’s guides.
Last year there were reports that both ViewSonic and Olive Telecom buy products from the same OEM and then print their logo on the device. ViewSonic is best known for its monitors, while Olive is a new communications device brand in India. Olive’s Gingerbread smartphone for India is expected to be the country’s first HSPA+ (high speed packet access) capable smartphone. OliveSmart is DLNA compatible. It has an HD out port for streaming content to a large display, and it has a USB port for synching data with a PC, and a standard 3.5 mm audio output jack.
The OliveSmart V-S300 Gingerbread comes loaded with Adobe Flash 10.1, Google Maps 5 with 3D interactive maps, and lifetime subscription to MapmyIndia’s services, an e book reader, a live TV app, and a document viewer and editor.
The phone’s software permits copy pasting, user interface customizations, and power management through software that monitors each running app. The device also has a download manager. Because it uses Android Gingerbread, the OliveSmart V-S300 smartphone will be capable of reading RFID tags and making mobile payments, using near field communication technology. It will also serve as a mobile Wifi router to support up to 5 other wireless devices, and it can take voice commands for searching within Google Maps 5, or for making a handsfree call etc.
