Nokia's Next Generation Java Platform for Series 60 phones is here
BY OUR TECH CORRESPONDENT
28 June, 2005: Nokia's Java-enabled Series 60 based smartphones will include an enhanced configuration for the Java platform, creating opportunities for more improvements in remote management of wireless devices and creating additional business opportunities for Java developers in the mobile middleware marketplace. This was announced at the 2005 JavaOne conference in San Francisco.
Nokia's vision for the new generation of Java in mobiles will build the Connected Device Configuration (CDC) into Series 60 phones. CDC offers a more flexible and modular device environment, on which cellphone manufacturers including Nokia and other Series 60 device makers can create versatile, powerful Java-enabled cellphones.
Built on the Symbian OS, the Series 60 Platform is the leading smartphone platform. It has been licensed by leading cellphone makers like LG, Lenovo, Samsung, Sendo Nokia, Panasonic and Siemens. Nokia alone had cumulatively sold 25 million Series 60 enabled devices by May-end 2005.
The next generation Java platform for Series 60 beefs up the underlying capabilities of Java technology which is now used in J2ME platform for mobile devices. This, consequently opens the door to the creation of powerful Java technology-based middleware programs, such as those that will enable operators and network administrators to remotely manage and monitor applications and the device platform. Besides, adding CDC on the Series 60 Platform will provide the base to enable Nokia and other Series 60 device makers to create next-generation mobile phones which will easily permit the addition and customization of functionality after a device has been manufactured and deployed.
"By facilitating wider interoperability and compatibility, the next generation Java platform for Series 60 will enable a greater choice of dynamic Java applications and improved service quality for both mobile consumer and enterprise users, creating demand for more service and device-management middleware from Java developers," said Lee Epting, Vice President, Forum Nokia. "Incorporating CDC into Series 60 platform will provide the foundation for mobile operators to offer more robust applications and compatible devices and increase service usage, while mobile enterprise end-users will experience a dramatic improvement in manageability of applications, better security and overall higher productivity."
Nokia's agenda for the future of Series 60 Java technology includes a platform which sports Mobile Operational Management which will be a standards-based, service-oriented, managed and secure computing environment for the Java platform in the mobile space. The implementation of facilities in Nokia's vision of the future Java platform will be matched with the specifications currently being defined under JSR-248, the first draft of which is under review, and JSR-249, slated for completion and review in early 2006. |
