24 May, 2007

The battle of the next-gen game consoles have only just begun and its getting got, according to reports in the US press. The current front-runner in the gaming console market is no doubt, the Microsoft XBox 360, but the rivals are not far behind. While Microsoft's prestigious gaming console has already sold out almost 5.4million units in the US itself, the main competitor, Nintendo Wii, since its debut in November 2006, has sold 2.5million units in the US. The most attractive feature of the Nintendo Wii is its motion sensing technology that allows gamers to use the controller with gestures and movements. The attractive price tag of USD 249 is sure to make it the best-selling console by end-2008.

The next main contender, Sony Playstation 3, which is a bit expensive than the other two, has sold almost 1.5 million units in the US.

This strong demand seems to have made the Nintendo team much confident and in more demand. According to Nintendo of America Senior Vice President of Marketing George Harrison, by 2012 they expect to have 35 million installed Nintendo Wii units in the US. He also said the demand is much more than the expectation.

Harrison also brushed off claims that the Nintendo Wii is behind its rivals when it comes to graphics and processing power. He also rubbished speculations that a new upgraded Nintendo Wii will be launched soon, adding that they will work on future technology only when they think its necessary.
