August 18, 2005: Nintendo game Boy Micro is here, well almost. Nintendo, the world's largest manufacturer of hand-held gaming devices said yesterday that it is set to unveil the Nintendo Game Boy Micro next month. Japan will see its first Nintendo Game Boy Micro on September 13, while the game deck will appear in the US markets on September 19. Europe will get to play on the Game Boy Micro from November 9 onwards.
Currently, the biggest competition for Nintendo's Game Boy is Sony's Playstation Portable (PSP) whch has been selling like hot cakes since its introdcution in the lucrative North American market.
The Game Boy Micro is only 4 inches wide, 2 inches long and 0.7 inches thin. It weighs 2.8 ounces, or 80 milli grams. It has a small screen, and easily fits into your pocket. Tagged at $99.99 for US, the Game Boy Micro plays all game titles currently available on earlier Nintendo models like the Game Boy Advance and the Game Boy DS.
The entire Game Boy game library boasts of over 700 titles. The Game Boy Micro has a 2-inch, sharp screen, and Start/Select buttons which glow with the neon-like blue found on many mobile phones.
The Game Boy Micro comes with both silver and black versions, each with three removable, snazzy faceplates so users can customise their Game Boy Micro.
Said George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications: "Game Boy goes anywhere, and now it fits anywhere. The incredibly small size of Game Boy micro belies the powerful technology shrunk into a hip new casing with an intensely bright screen; and at under $100, it's a must-have."
The Game Boy Micro in black will include one faceplate with a "Flame" design of fiery yellow double helixes on an orange background. It also will come with a green "Camouflage" faceplate and a chic silver faceplate. The silver Game Boy micro will include an "Ammonite" faceplate with a dark blue swirling pattern. It also will come with a "Ladybug" faceplate that features a ladybug on a large pink gerbera daisy, and a slick black faceplate.
The faceplates on theGame Boy Micro serve a secondary function beyond simple style. They form a durable, protective cover over the luminous screen of the Game Boy micro.
