Mozilla has released Firefox 4 Internet browser to public for free download.
The browser wars are hotting up with the recent release of Internet Explorer 9 and Google Chrome getting frequent updates.
Firefox 4 is Mozilla’s fastest Firefox yet and is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux in more than 80 languages. However, the first thing you would notice is Firefox’s simplified new look. Related: Opera Mobile 11, Opera Mini 6 released
When Firefox 3 was released, it logged 8 million downloads in a 24-hour period, creating a world record for most downloaded application. Mozilla, with more than 400 million users worldwide, has put up a tracker website for Firefox 4 download stats. You can see for yourself when Firefox 4 hits the 8 million mark.
Performance: Firefox is up to six times faster than Firefox 3.6.15. With improved start-up and page load times, speedy Web app performance and hardware accelerated graphics, Mozilla has optimized Firefox for interactive websites.
HTML5 support: HTML5 support in Firefox includes hardware accelerated, high-definition video (WebM), 3D graphics, offline data storage, professional typography, touchscreen interfaces and the Mozilla Audio API to help create visual experiences for sound.
Customization: The new Firefox 4 comes with an upgraded Adds-On Manager to let you customize the features, functionality and look of Firefox. If you have Windows XP though, Mozilla, like Internet Explorer, has sidelined you for Windows 7 users. Your XP will offer you fewer customization offers and minimal changes in the UI.
App Tabs: You can pin frequently visited sites like Web mail, Twitter, Pandora, Flickr. Right click on the tab and select “Pin as App Tab.” The page icons would show in the left corner of the tab bar. If you get an update or a new message in a pinned site, your icon will turn blue to notify you.
Switch to Tab: This lets you easily find and switch to any open tab without opening duplicate tabs. You can search for and switch to already open tabs in the Smart Location Bar.
Panorama: Now you can drag and drop tabs into manageable groups to save time while navigating many open tabs.
Privacy and security: Firefox 4 comes with a Do Not Track feature that allows users to opt-out of tracking used for behavioral advertising. The new browser also prevents cross-scripting attacks by allowing sites to explicitly tell the browser which content is legitimate.
Firefox Sync: Firefox 4 gives you an option to sync your browser history, bookmarks, open tabs, passwords and form data across multiple computers and mobile devices.
For this, you will have to create a Firefox Sync account by clicking on Sync in Options found under Menu. Once you create an account, Firefox will send you a alphanumeric “Sync Key” which you let you access your Firefox Sync account from other devices.
