Update: Motorola
ROKR iTunes phone coming
25 August, 2005: The Motorola iTunes phone is one step closer to reality, with Motorola receiving regulatory approval to start selling a cell phone which runs a mobile version of Apple Computer's iTunes software. The Motorola E790 cell phone will have mobile version of Apple's iTunes. The Motorola E790 will also come with stereo speakers, removable flash memory and Bluetooth.
According to a manual posted on the FCC website, "iTunes is a software application you use to manage the music on your computer and transfer music to your phone. You can use iTunes to purchase and download music for your phone, listen to CDs and digital music, and create playlists of your favorite songs on your phone."
The Motorola iTunes phone will be the culmination of a long wait by iTunes fans for a device to hook into the popular online music portal iTunes through he convenience of a cell phone. Apple and Motorola have promised such a phone for long, but the plans have been deferred several times. In July, Motorola chief Ed Zander had said that the first Motorola iTunes phone will be in the market by the end of the current fiscal quarter.
Though the information on the Motorola iTunes phone has been posted on the FCC website, the company's spokesperson has not commented on the iTunes-capable mobile phone. Meanwhile an Apple spoksemans just reiterated the company's earlier statment that the first iTunes phone will start selling this summer.
Before any wireless device can be sold in the US, it needs a regulatory approval from the US FCC. The Motorola E790 iTunes phone has been posted as one of the accompanying documents along with the note on the FCC site. The device itself was approved in July, though the iTunes information was only posted to the site on Saturday.
The photo which accompanies the Motorola application shows the Motorola E398, which is already in the US market. The new iTines phone may be similar in design to the E398.
The latest iTunes version 4.9, has several hidden references to mobile phone-related features, though such features are not visible to those currently using iTunes.
