The first-ever GPS-enabled mobile phone has debuted in India. US mobile phone giant Motorola has launched its new GPS-enabled Motoming A 1600 in the country and the phone will be made available at a price of Rs 15,487.
One unique fact about the new Motorola device is that it comes pre-loaded with landmarks of as many as 30 cities in India thus making it GPS-enabled It also offers navigational services , said company sources. According to a senior company executive Motoming A 1600 is the first GPS-enabled mobile phone and the navigation service would come free with no activation charges, independent of mobile networks and can be used even without inserting the SIM card.
The phone comes with a satellite-based GPS which offers consumers lifetime free GPS navigation maps and landmarks of 30 cities, he added. The Motoming A 1600 carries a 1 GB MicroSD card and an expandable memory capacity of up to 4 GB and a 3.2 mega pixel camera.
The phone also boasts of certain features from MapmyIndia, whch are preloaded into the device. One major aspect about Motorola’s new device is that the phone allows voice-guided navigation across major national and state highways. The phone comes with a 2.4-inch TFT touchscreen display with 262K colors and boasts of QVGA resolution. Among the other variety features are Bluetooth A2DP, microUSB port, microSD card slot, 3 MP camera and integrated GPS receiver. Measuring around 98.9 x 53.5 x 19.6 in millimeters, the phone is 128 grams heavy.
The A1600 is said to run on Linux OS, as was the case with its predecessor Motoming A1200. The new device also has a quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support. The phone however does not support 3G or Wifi, said reviews.
Yeat another aspect on why it is likely to be accepted in India is that it comes with a 3 megapixel camera with continuous autofocus. This feature, in fact, is a first for a mobile phone. The camera works in such a way that it can capture a slew of images in GIF format and then save them all in one single animated GIF. Besides, the business card scanner application incorporated in the 1600 is an addition. The built-in GPS receiver makes it sure that users can enjoy real-time GPS navigation as well as geo-tagging of the photos taken by the 3 megapixel camera.
