IRRITATING NET JARGON

The most irritating words on the Net

Words that make you feel worse!

26 June, 2007

Nasty, irritating words all over the World Wide Web are being lambasted left, right and centre. An online poll has picked words such as Blog, Netiquette, Cookie and Wiki as the most annoying. However, the worst hit has befallen Folksonomy, a term for web classification system, with voters damning it as the most annoying. According to the voters, the word made them wince, shudder or bang their head on the keyboard.

YouGov, a British market research company, which has made public the result of the online poll said the word Blogosphere, has also emerged as a major irritant for net surfers along with Blook, which is a term referring to book based on a blog. The poll conducted among 2091 adults in early June, as part of the YouGov initiated survey. A report said that the poll was commissioned by the Lulu Blooker Prize, a literary award for books based on blogs.

While, Blogosphere came second in the worst word list, Blog itself was third, Netiquette or Internet etiquette, came fourth and Blook came fifth. Meanwhile, the other words picked by users to slam were Cookie, a file sent to a user's computer after they visit a website, and Wiki, a collaborative website edited by its readers.

It had earlier been reported that the growing use of words inspired by cyberspace was highlighted when the Collins English Dictionary announced that a string of them would be included in their ninth edition. The new words included "me-media", a term for personal content websites such as Facebook, and "godcast", a religious service which has been converted to an MP3 format.
