Microsoft prices Xbox 360 at $299.99

 August 18, 2005: Microsoft has announced the much-awaited pricing on Xbox on Wednesday. Xbox, the next generation game system will start at $299.99.

Microsoft is scheduled to launch Xbox in North America for the holiday season. The software giant's game system will include the console, one controller, a white faceplate and an audiovisual cable.

Active gamers can upgrade their Xbox to the premium edition for another $100. In additon to the standard equipment, the premium package features a headset, remote, membership to the Xbox Live entertainment and chat network, and a 20GB hard drive for storing games, music, and other content downloaded from Xbox Live. Moreover, the whole system will be a wireless one.

Optional components can be purchased separately along with memory units, battery packs and other accessories. 

Built-in Ethernet ports are provided in both the standard and premium editions and they can play DVDs, CDs, MP3s and digital content from other devices, including cameras.

Microsoft has also announced the pricing for European markets. The company is currently racing with Sony and Nintendo to make the device as popular as possible among the gamers. The core version of Xbox 360 will cost about 209 pounds in Britain($378) and elsewhere in Europe for 299 euros ($368); including accessories, the prices would be 279 pounds and 399 euros.

Microsoft has said that it would announce the pricing for Japanese market at the Tokyo games fair next month.
