LG has announced its latest phone, the Optimus GT540 that would run Android. With the new device, LG plans to target first-time smartphone users who have stayed away from the devices fearing their complexity. The LG Optimus GT540 is designed to be simple and user-friendly in order to cater to its target consumer and the company has excluded some features present on its higher-end smartphone models.

There is no information yet on the price of the LG Optimus GT540. It is expected to be relatively cheap. The phone will be launched in the UK first – there is no information on the possible launch of the Optimis in the US or India. A Europe-wide launch will follow the UK launch.

The LG Optimus GT540 runs on Android 1.6 Donut as its OS, instead of the latest versions. It has a 3-inch touchscreen with 420×320 pixel resolution. A 3-megapixel camera is also included in the phone, along with a 3.5 mm jack for headphones. The camera has features for geo-tagging, automatic face-tagging and face-to-action technology support. The phone is available in four colours. As you can see from the LG Optimus GT540 photos on this page, this is no great looker – but a beginner phone need not look like an iPhone or Motorola Droid anyway!

The LG Optimus GT540 also incorporates social networking in the phone, with built-in apps such as Facebook, Twitter and Bebo. It also allows users to sync all their Google accounts including Gmail, Gtalk, Youtube and Google Maps. Users can also download apps for social networking and customizing the user interface from the Android Market.

The video player of the LG Optimis GT540 can play DivX and Xvid videos without the need for separate encoding. The video interface also allows for dragging and dropping and video editing software is also present in the phone. Optimus users can also browse through their multimedia files in the 3D thumbnail gallery.

Additional features on the Optimus include an FM radio, Bluetooth 2.1, a durable 1500 mAh battery and assisted GPS. The low on-board memory in the Optimus is supported by external memory capability via MicroSD of up to 32 GB.

The LG Optimus is due to be available in stores from 1 May, 2010.
