Internet Explorer 9, the latest version of Microsoft’s web browser, is in the works. Steven Sinofsky, Microsoft’s head of Windows and Windows Live announced this at the Windows Professional Developers’ Conference today. No photographs, images or screenshots were made available, but the company released some bare minimum details about the new Windows browser, the Internet Explorer 9.

Internet Explorer 9, he said, fares much better than competing browsers Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Apple Safari. Internet Explorer 9 is expected to bridge the performance gap between Microsoft and rival browsers, and conform better to Web standards.

Though Microsoft did not say that it will support the evolving HTML 5, the company said that it will be more responsible to it, signaling the tech giant’s sensitivity to the changes in the language of the Web.

Being in the early development stages, Microsoft is unable to provide any screenshots or details about Internet Explorer 9. The company said that the new browser has been under development for only the last three weeks. That’s too early to give any details, forget screenshots, of the new browser.

Sinofsky also admitted at PDC that JavaScript rendering on Internet Explorer 8 was decidedly slower than in competing browsers. He claimed that the current build of Internet Explorer 9 has bridged this gap. He said that Microsoft is also developing a faster rendering engine. While Internet Explorer 8 scored 24 on ACID Test, the benchmark test for web browsers, Internet Explorer 9 scored 32, he said. He said the internal debate on the level of support for HTML 5 is still under way among the Microsoft team developing Internet Explorer 9.

Microsoft is also planning to make utilize DirectX-based hardware accelerated graphics and content in Internet Explorer 9. This is also expected to increase font quality and readability in Internet Explorer 9.
