International roaming from Reliance mobiles

19th August 2005: Reliance Infocomm has started offering international roaming on its CDMA mobile phones. The company claimed in a press release that it is India's first and only CDMA operator to provide international roaming on CDMA mobile phones. Currently, international roaming on RIM is available only in US, Israel, China, New Zealand and Indonesia. Reliance Infocomm said that the company is an advanced stage of negotiations with operators in several other countries too, including Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Canada.

Currently, international roaming on Reliance Infocomm mobile phones is available with the following operators abroad:

China: China Unicom
Israel: Pelephone Cellular Communications
USA: Sprint PCS
Indonesia: Mobile-8
New Zealand: Telecom Mobile Ltd.

Reliance Infocomm is also in talks to introduce international roaming on its mobiles with another operator in the US. Reliance Infocomm also said that it near to signing agreements with 12 operators in 11 countries across three continents, which account for 90% of the global CDMA mobile footprint.

"While tariff will differ from country to country, our rates are structured to be highly competitive. For instance, rates for calls within foreign country are the best in the industry. Going forward, we intend to launch more products that will cater to the needs of international travelers like high speed data services and bring in synergies to existing products, " said Inder Bajaj, Head - Post Paid Business, Reliance Infocomm. "Following these tie-ups, postpaid subscribers of Reliance IndiaMobile will be able to remain connected with their homes and the rest of the world while roaming in these countries. Subscribers from these countries will be able to get similar service while visiting India. Many of these countries are very popular tourist destinations for Indians, while India receives a sizeable in-bound visitors from these countries," he said.

An Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Enterprises group company, Reliance Infocomm Ltd is the country's largest private information and communications services provider, with a subscriber base of over 12 million. Reliance Infocomm has established a pan-India, high-capacity, integrated (wireless and wireline), convergent (voice, data and video) digital network, to offer services spanning the entire Infocomm value chain.

As part of the settlement in the Ambani family, Reliance Infocomm, besides Reliance Energy and Reliance Capital went to the younger Anil Ambani, while elder brother Mukesh Ambani got Reliance Industries.
