The Honda U3-X comprises a stool with a multi-directional wheel system that allows it to travel in different directions, right, left, forward, backward, sideways, as well as diagonally.

Honda claims that its omni-directional wheel system, or what it calls its HOT Drive System (Honda Omni Traction Drive System), is the “world’s first wheel structure which enables movement in all directions.”

The self-balancing Honda U3-X unicycle uses balance control technology that eliminates the need for riders to keep balancing themselves, when in motion.

Honda said in a statement, “The incline sensor detects the incline of the device based on the weight shift of the rider and determines the rider’s intention in terms of the direction and speed. Based on the data, precise control is applied to return the device to an upright position, which achieves smooth and agile movements and simple operation by weight shift only.”

The Honda U3-X also has an elevated seat – higher than the waistline of an average size person – that allows riders to be at relative eye level with passing pedestrians while riding.

Reports say that the Honda U3-X unicycle, that weight less than 10kg, can go at a speed of 3.7 MPH on an hour of battery life.

So who is the target audience of this unicycle? Takanobu Ito, the president of Honda, was quoted as saying, “I may want to use it in my home. It’d be easier to get around so I might really use it if my legs grow weaker.” Perhaps, Honda wants to target people in an older age group or those who have problems with walking around.

Honda will display the Honda U3-X at the Tokyo Motor Show 2009, that will be held in October. Whether it will hit the mass market is anybody’s guess.
