The medium format DSLR camera is aimed at younger photography pros who may not have been exposed to large format photography.

Hasselblad CEO Larry Hansen said, “Many of the younger generation of shooters are not aware of the fact that Medium Format DSLRs have evolved equally dramatically, maintaining – and even in some cases increasing – the quality gap that has historically existed between small format and larger format systems.”

The Hasselblad H4D-40 medium format DSLR has a jaw-dropping 40-million-pixel CCD imaging sensor, measuring 33×44 mm, twice the surface area of 35mm DSLR sensors.

It packs a new True Focus AF system that offers shallower depth of field range on medium formats for better creative compositions.

At the heart of the True Focus AF system is an Absolute Position Lock processor that solves the problem of fixing off-center focus points, without using autofocus sensors like most SLRs.

The APL processor captures camera movement during any re-composing of shots and uses these exact measurements to fix the required focus adjustment, and execute the focus corrections. All of this is accomplished at such a speed that no shutter lag is detected.

Another feature of the Hasselblad H4D-40 is the Hasselblad Natural Color Solution (HNCS) that provides consistent color reproduction with the use of a single color profile, digital lens correction (DAC), and perfects photos by removing distortion, vignetting, or chromatic aberrations.

The Hasselblad H4D-40 DSLR camera will be launched worldwide starting February 10, 2010, and will be available at a price of $19,955 (3,995 Euro, £ 12.995). An 80mm lens and viewfinder, and the company’s Phocus 2.0 photography program will be bundled in.
