Gscreen Space Book, the first laptop with dual-screen ready for launch, Gscreen, the company making the unique double screen laptop
said it should be available for sale through Amazon by December holidays shopping season. The dual-screen Spacebook may be available
at a price of $3000.
The Gscreen Spacebook has two screens, one sliding behind the other. According to the specifications released by Gscreen, the processor and
RAM are power enough to drive two electricity0hungry monitors. The Gscreen Spacebook dual-screen laptop will have an Inter Core 2 Duo Processor P8400 with a clock speed of 2.26-GHz and a hard disk as big as 320 GB. The RAM will 4 GB, with two units of 2GB DDR2 SO-DIMM chips. The machine will run Windows XP and Windows Vista, the company said, though the specifications of the Spacebook twin-screen laptop are good enough to load Windows 7 too, as and when the new operating system starts shipping.
The Spacebook will come with an NVIDIA® GeForce® 9800M GT with 512MB dedicated memory (or) NVIDIA® Quadro FX 1700M Graphics with 512MB dedicated memory, GSCreen said. The two major questions will be about the weight and power consumption. The double-screen Spacebook laptop will be powered by a 9-cell battery, which will make it heavier. Adding to it will be the weight of the extra monitor. Its expected that the new double screen laptop will weigh about 4 kg approx.
Who needs two monitors on their laptops though? Obviously this is not for the regular personal computer user. The Spacebook is clearly aimed
at the enterprise market, and where business applications and presentations have to made on the go.
IEEE 1394 1 Graphics Card Output (15-pin, D-Sub) X 1, HDMI X 1 Mic-in X 1, Line-in x 1, Headphone X 1 PCI Express Card X 1 AC Power Adaptor Output: 19V DC, 90W Input: 100~240V AC, 50/60Hz universal Battery Pack Li-ion 9 cells. The company did not say anything about the battery life of the two-screen Spacebook.
The two screens will be of 15.4 inch size. Gscreen feels there is a multi-million dollar market for twin-laptops with two screens, and hopes to tap this market. The company also has plans to launch dual-screen laptops like Spacebook with 13 inch screens, which will be lighter and hopefully have longer battery life.
Lenovo already has a dual-screen laptop launched earlier this year, named the Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds, though it is clearly not in the league of the twin-screen Spacebook. The auxiliary display on the bulky Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds functions as a secondary display, a bit like the picture-in-picture function in many televisions. The secondary screen can be folded back when its not in use, just like the Spacebook screen which slides behind when its not in use.
