3 November 2006: Go mobile, sport a Google phone! Sounds interesting, right? When Microsoft and Yahoo have taken the lead in attempting features of this sort, can Google be far behind? Search engine major Google Inc will release a downloadable version of its Gmail free email service for cell phones.

India will have to wait, however. The free software to be available only in the US is said to be compatible with more than 300 cell phones, and can be downloaded by pointing a phone's Web browser to gmail.com/app or by text messaging the software to a phone from a personal computer, reports said. And significantly, the cell phone gmail will not have any ads on it.

Google would ensure that the Gmail experience can be fine tuned to the make and model of the phone used. There will also be features like making a call by clicking on a Gmail contact list. With the new innovation, it is believed that the downloadable cell phone application would help accelerate Gmail use.

Yahoo had already made a foray into this segment some time ago..

Yahoo in fact had made its mark by partnering with major cell phone manufacturers to make sure that many of its features get embedded in cell phones by the makers themselves. Meanwhile, Microsoft Corporation too had forged a partnership with Verizon Wireless and serves as the Internet portal for most Verizon Wireless phones.
