Samsung’s new Galaxy Tab 8.9 is all set to be unveiled at the CTIA 2011, but its pictures have already surfaced on the Internet.
The upcoming Galaxy Tab has a middle-of-the-road size: between the original 7-inch tablet and the recently released Galaxy Tab 10.1. The WVGA touch display has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, which means the Samsung tablet would have greater pixel density than Motorola’s Xoom tablet.
From these photos, many other technical specifications of the 8.9-inch tablet can also be figured out. Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 would run Android 3.0 aka Honeycomb OS, with Samsung’s own UX on top of the Android UI.
The new Galaxy Tab is powered by a 1Ghz dual core processor and Samsung promises that the tablet will give a “PC-like performance.” The mid-sized tablet is 8.6mm thick and weighs 470 grams. Suggested read: Thinner, faster iPad 2 launched
The Galaxy Tab 8.9 would give the user an option to customize the layout of the home screen according to his preferences, which would let him see a variety of content at a glance. This feature is called Live Screen.
The native home screen would feature widgets like Buddies Now, Agenda, e-mail, Weather, News, Stocks, Gallery, Date, and Bookmark.
Another feature of the Samsung tablet is its Mini Apps Tray which facilitates multitasking. Clicking on the Mini Apps Tray button on the bottom of the screen pops up the application without switching screens.
A similar feature can be found in RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet also where you can see the preview of the apps open in background.
For connectivity, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 would feature dual Wi-Fi antenna for 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. We suspect that this version of the tablet might not be 3G-enabled.
Nevertheless, the tablet sounds very promising an if Samsung can manage to deliver a decent battery performance, the 8.9 should find itself quite a few fans.
Samsung has been quick to release its products in India after their launch. We should see the new Galaxy Tabs hit the Indian shelves in the second quarter of 2011. We expect the Galaxy Tab 8.9 to carry a price tag of around Rs. 30,000 in India.
And with new Galaxy Tabs being released, the original tablet from Samsung is finding itself headed toward extinction. No wonder the original Galaxy Tab prices are being slashed every day.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 will be unveiled today at the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event at the CTIA 2011 in Florida. A teaser video has been put up on YouTube for the same. Check out the video below:
