LG Optimus U is scheduled for its launch on Dec. 13 and will be heading to U.S. Cellular for sale. LG Optimus U is targeted at first-time smartphone users who want to experience the power of Google’s Android 2.2 technology.
The good news is that the LG Optimus U will be available in U.S. Cellular stores and at www.uscellular.com for free (yes, for free!) after an $80 mail-in rebate.
LG Optimus U runs on Google Android 2.2 Froyo and sports a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen. It comes with a virtual QWERTY keyboard with Swype technology. Swype technology helps you enter the text quickly by just sliding a finger over the keyboard but in one continuous motion. The phone supports five home screens that help users to access their favorite applications and customize them.

Optimus U gives access to Google applications like Google Maps, Google Talk and Gmail that comes pre-loaded on the phone. Also, there is a navigation tool called Navigator Deluxe that gives voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation to the user. Users can get ringtones from the Tone Room Deluxe and store all their contacts on a secure website with the help of a feature called My Contacts Backup.
The LG Optimus U comes with a 2GB microSD card and offers up to 32GB of expandable memory via an external memory card. It has a 3.2 megapixel camcorder with autofocus and zoom capabilities. You also get a 3.5mm headphone jack and Wi-Fi support for up to five devices through built-in portable hot spot capabilities in the Optimus U.

Edward Perez, vice president of marketing and sales operations for U.S. Cellular said, “The LG Optimus U is a good fit for first-time smartphone customers who are looking to explore a wide range of games, multimedia entertainment and time-saving Android applications. Customers with one of our Belief Plans who are eligible for a phone upgrade can pick up an LG Optimus U at our promotional price without signing a new contract.”
If a customer opts for the Belief Plan and fulfills an initial two-year commitment, then that customer will never have to sign another contract with U.S. Cellular’s “no contract after the first” scheme. Moreover, the customers will get valuable rewards in 10 months time, which they can utilize for faster phone upgrades. Also, they get additional lines, phones, accessories and ringtones.
LG has used different carriers for its Optimus versions. For example, the LG Optimus T for T-Mobile, the Optimus S for Sprint, the Optimus M for MetroPCS, Verizon has the LG Vortex, which is in the same family of phones but doesn’t share the Optimus name. And now, Optimus U goes to U.S. Cellular.
