A lot of us, who are into gadgets, and movies have always thought about getting a cheap LCD projector for a home theatre setup, I am sure. I did, and several people I have talked to have expressed disappointment that there are no affordable home theatre projectors for us in India.

Epson EMP-DM1 home theatre projector in India

Some have gone ahead and tried to buy used home cinema projectors, some would make do with just about any projector, and some would finally forget it and settle for a rear projection or LCD TV. Some would scour the internet for guides on how to build your own projector endlessly, download guides, and stay frustrated forever.

Well, projectors are still not as cheap in India as I feel they should be. But at least, there is hope on the horizon. In a newspaper today, I saw an advertisement for the Epson EMP-DM1 home theatre projector at a price of just Rs 59,000! That is amazing – that is around the price that you would pay for an Sony LCD TV in India, I think. Forget that LCD TV, and go in for this!

Okay, your family may not think its such a wise idea to watch Friends or Bigg Boss 2 on a projector. A bit painful, I agree. In fact, very painful. But if you can do it, I suggest you go for it.

The Epson EMP-DM1 home cinema projector also has another shocker. It comes free with a Microsoft XBOX 360 gaming console, which has a market price of Rs 20,000! Whoa!

Okay, so it may not be easy for a family man to convince his spouse that even with a Microsoft XBOX 360 thrown in, a projector is a good idea. But if you are a bachelor who can afford it – with a loan + instalment scheme or cash payment, I suggest you go for it. After all when you get married, your wife is hardly going to get rid of something that expensive. And with the XBox 360, remember that you get hi-definition video too. Though I don’t think the Epson EMP-DM1 can handle high def.

The Epson EMP-DM1 comes with a built in DVD player and 8-watt stero speakers. Yes, this is an all-in-one projector. All you need is to plug in the projector, and you are set for hours of 300 inch wide cinema, or life-size video gaming! And you can get some cheap speaker set easily if you want. The built in DVD player of the home theatre projector can handle video formats such as DivX, video CD and Super Video CD. Plus you get Dolby Digital, DTS Digital Surround and Virtual Surround.

It is lightweight too, so you don’t have to call in a coolie to move your little home theatre projector. It weights only 3.8 kilos. When it was launched in India, this little home cinema projector cost rs 63,000. Now it is available at Rs 59,000 with a rs 20,000 value XBOX 360 – things don’t get any better for the casual home theatre enthusiast in India.

But is it bright enough? You will have to test this out yourself. The projector offers 1000 ANSI Lumens – but a lot depends on your room, and lighting in the room. So if you have a bright room, it may not be enough for you. The Epson EMP-DM1 home theatre projector’s native resolution is only 480p – not what many would be happy with.

I personally am someone who thinks that any home theater projector at this price is like manna from heaven, and where are those dark drapes for all the windows! But you may have different priorities, and so better to check it out yourself. Find the local Epson dealer and ask for a demo.
