BenQ unveils SolidBurn technology

BenQ unveils DVD burning technology SolidBurn.

BY OUR TECHNOLOGY CORRESPONDENT

19 August, 2005: BenQ has unveiled its SolidBurn Technology, which ensures optimum CD writing conditions for any recordable DVD+/-R media. Besides, SolidBurn technology allows better over-speed burning 4x or 8x DVD+/-R media at 8x or higher speeds.

SolidBurn Technology tackles the problem of disc compatibility versus burning quality. While many CD/DVD drive makers require users to frequent firmware updates to make sure of compatibility with new discs, Solid Burn Technology by Benq uses a high-tech self-learning writing strategy algorithm that does away with the need for downloading firmware frequently.

Alpha Tsai, BenQ Vice-President of Storage Division, Computing Products Business Group said: "BenQ has created a breakthrough technology that significantly reduces the compatibility bottleneck for discs from different manufacturers, and therefore, ensures solid writing quality. In addition, SolidBurn Technology allows over-speed burning 4x or 8x DVD+/-R media at 8x or higher speeds.”

The new BenQ disc writing technology performs several tests which determine the optimal writing technique for DVD media of “unknown” quality.

Since this optimal writing technique is dependent on the specific disc characteristics, it is unavoidable that the media support table written in the drives firmware will need to be periodically updated to include new media. Earlier, when a drive tried to write to any unknown DVD media, a less optimal “standard” writing strategy was used. This led to lower recording speeds besides poor quality of recording.

In BenQ's SolidBurn technology, it applies its own self learning writing strategy algorithm to peroit unknown DVD media to be written with higher quality. Users need not constantly update the media support list in their DVD drive, as the drive itself ensures the best writing quality.

SolidBurn Technology also allows enhanced over-speed burning quality. Utilizing the latest BenQ QSuite 2.0 tool, users can choose to activate/deactivate the drive's over-speed burning function at their discretion.

Currently, the BenQ products with embedded SolidBurn Technology include DW1640 and EW164B.
