The Web is abuzz with rumors that Dell is working on a dual GPU Alienware laptop, the M18x.

The upcoming Dell Alienware M18x laptop would be a gaming notebook and offer GPU options of either AMD’s CrossFire or Nvidia’s SLI graphics cards. Dell Alienware M18x leaked details are presumed to be leaked by a Dell engineer and have not been confirmed by the company. Related: Top gaming laptops in India

The gaming laptop M18x is said to be available in black and red colors. It is claimed that the dual graphics options would leverage the gaming experience two-fold compared to M18x’s predecessor Dell Alienware M17x R3.

Key features of gaming laptops

The fact of the matter is that for a gaming notebook to be tagged top-notch, it must be equipped with some key hardware features. First and foremost, the graphics processing unit–this is the standout specification that determines how good, or bad, your gaming rig is. The faster the GPU, the better immersive gaming experience you can expect from the notebook. And yes, it’s always better to go in for a discrete graphics card instead of an integrated GPU–if your primary requirement from the laptop is the gaming factor.

Then comes the processor–as you would be aware, the CPU determines the overall speed of your PC, irrespective of whatever activity (even non-gaming stuff) you are doing with the system. And not to forget that the true potential of a fast GPU can only be realized by a really powerful processor.

One should also factor in the screen resolution and quick refresh rates for fast-paced games at really big resolution? Finally, a good gaming laptop should have a minimum hard drive capacity of 320GB and RAM of between 4GB to 8GB.

Dell Alienware M17x R3 gaming notebook is powered only by Nvidia GeForce GTX with 460M. Mobility Radeon HD 6870 or 6970 graphics is identical to Alienware M17X but concentrates on HD video playback. Also see: Nvidia GeForce GTX 480, 470

Dell Alienware M18x speculated specs

Dell Alienware M18x laptop is expected to have a 18.4-inch, 1920×1080 pixels resolution, TrueLife glossy panel with environment friendly WLED (White Light Emitting Diode) display for brighter lighting instead of standard cathode tubes used in most of LCDs, but this technology costs a bit higher and that would be reflected in the new Alienware’s price.

Dell Alienware M18x is speculated to have Intel’s Sandy Bridge platform and boast optional 2x AMD 6970M CrossFireX (ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6970) or “Overclocker’s Dream”-2x Nvidia GTX 460M (SLI) graphics card configuration to provide significant high-end graphics gaming performance to the users.

Unlike M17X nine-cell battery with 93Wh, Dell Alienware M18x laptop would be energized by 12Cell, 97WHr battery for improved power consumption.

Despite of Alienware common drawbacks like freezing while surfing, playing a game or checking e-mails and low-battery issues, the Dell Alienware M18x gaming laptop is anticipated to come out as a best breed from the Alienware line-up.
