The government-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched its 24 megabits per second (Mbps) ultra-fast broadband internet service in India. This is the fastest broadband internet service available in India so far.
BSNL’s offering comes in 2 packages – 16 Mbps, which costs Rs 4, 999 a month; and 24 Mbps, costing Rs 9, 999 a month. The high-speed broadband internet from BSNL can be used for HDTV and IPTV over the internet.
However, there are some limits, too. While the super-fast 24 Mbps broadband internet can be accessed only at a distance of up to 500 metres from the BSNL exchange, the 16 Mbps broadband service is available only to customers living from 1 kilometre from the exchange. BSNL currently lacks the ability to offer its fastest broadband service to longer distances.
BSNL is providing the high-speed broadband service using the very high speed digital subscriber loop (VDSL) technology. BSNL’s metro counterpart MTNL already offers 20 MBPS VDSL broadband internet services in Mumbai and New Delhi.
The new speed of BSNL’s broadband internet service at 24 Mbps has broken the record of Bharti Airtel, which offers 16 Mbps.
At present, BSNL provides broadband speeds ranging from 256 kbps to 8 mbps, content-based services, video-conferencing and audio-conferencing, multi-cast video services, video-on-demand, and virtual private network (VPN) service through the Broadband Remote Access Server (BRAS).
