European iTunes Music Store Tops 50 Million Songs in First Year

25 June, 2005: Apple said that over 50 million songs have been purchased and downloaded from its European iTunes Music Stores in the first year. iTunes Music Stores opened in June 2004 in the UK, France and Germany. Now, iTunes Music Stores operate in in 17 European nations including Finland, Greece, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Netherlands, Norway, and Switzerland. The European iTunes Music Stores have catalogs of more than one million songs each, and boast of content from all leading music companies and over 1,000 independent labels.

Said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of Applications: “we’re thrilled to have sold and delivered over 50 million songs in our first year. We’d like to thank European music fans for making iTunes such a success.”

Breakthrough pricing and seamless integration with iPod are the hallmarks of All iTunes Music Stores. it was the iconic iPod which made iTunes the number one online music service in the world. Since its launch barely two years ago, the iTunes Music Store has extended its reach to more than 70% of the global music market with stores in 19 countries, including the US and Canada, and more than 430 million songs bought and downloaded across the world.

Mac and PC users get the same innovative features such as iMix, audiobooks, the ability to create and print stunning jewel case inserts, Party Shuffle, and automatic WMA to AAC conversion from the iTune Music Stores. Very recently, iTunes has added the ability for users to download videos with chosen albums and singles, as well as the ability to pre-order albums. All iTunes Music Stores feature the same personal use rights, giving users the ability to play songs on up to five personal computers, burn a single song onto CDs an unlimited number of times, burn the same playlist up to seven times and listen to their music on an unlimited number of iPods.
