11 July, 2005: Podcasting on Internet has gone mainstream, with Apple Computer integrating podcast-receiving facility into its leading audio-music software iTunes 4.9. From now on, listen to podcasts from radio distant stations on the internet, at your own leisure, and download them into your iPod. The iConic iPod which was till now a music player, also doubles up as your radio-on-the-go, since radio podcasts can be downloaded right into iPod from your computer. From now, radio programme schedlues are history: iTunes cometh!
Podcasting, for beginners, is audio programmes "beamed" on the internet, as against radio signals beamed from signal stations. The programmes can be tuned and listened to over a computer with Internet conection. The programmes (called podcasts) can then be downloaded on to an iPod, and listened to whenever you feel like.
The new directory in iTunes catalogues over 3,000 audio programs, free of cost, making it one of the biggest listings of podcasts in the world. Some of the podcast favourites are ABC News, BBC, Clear Channel, Adam Curry, The Dawn and Drew Show, Disney, Engadget, ESPN, Newsweek and NPR member stations like KCRW and WGBH.
It's a breeze to find podcast stations to anyone's interest through iTunes. If you are particularly interested in any podcast, iTunes enables you to quickly and easily spot them and suscribe for the podcasts. Once you are subscribed to the specific podcast, every time a new episode goes "on air", it’s downloaded to their Mac® or PC and Auto-Synced to their iPod. iTunes also makes it easy to manage multiple Podcast subscriptions with simple organization and display by episode and date. Starting today, iPods will offer an easy to use Podcast menu, including bookmarking within a Podcast and the ability to display color Podcast artwork.
With the podcast receiving facility, users can now discover, subscribe, manage and listen to Podcasts right into Apple iTiTunes 4.9, its software-cum-online music store rolled into one. iTunes users can now sign up for over 3,000 free Podcasts and have each new episode delivered automatically to their computer and iPod®.
Says Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO: “Apple is taking Podcasting mainstream by building it right into iTunes. Podcasting is the next generation of radio, and users can now subscribe to over 3,000 free Podcasts and have each new episode automatically delivered over the Internet to their computer and iPod."
With over 15 million iPods sold till March 31, 2005, the iPod has become the world’s dominant digital music player. iTunes Music Store is the top music store on the internet, with over 430 million songs purchased and downloaded worldwide.
The Apple iTunes 4.9 is available as a free download from Apple.com or itunes.com. It is offered i both PC and macintosh versions. If you are using any of the iPod variants, a small update will need to be made, which can be downloaded from
apple.com.
