AMD PHENOM X3

AMD's triple core Phenom X3 processors to revolutionise market

29 April 2008

In a revolutionary move to change the dual core process sector, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has announced the availability of three new triple-core x86 processors in its Phenom X3 lineup. The new offerings include the 8750, the 8650 and the 8450, with power levels ranging from 2.4 to 2.1 gigahertz. AMD has added three new offerings to its unique triple-core X3 8000 line.

The 8750, 8650 and 8450 will follow chips released last month that straddle the line between quad-core and dual-core processors. AMD's triple-core strategy is intended to compete with Intel by offering chips with an extra core at prices competitive with those of its rival's dual-core processors.

There were apprehensions in the industry that these tri-cores would be failed with a single processor deactivated, when AMD announced the tri-core processors last year. But it has proved that they are capable of introducing advanced technologies successfully. AMD is creating this spot between the quads and duals that is priced like a dual.

Operating at a maximum of 65-watts, the AMD Phenom Quad-Core processor, when matched with an AMD 790 series chipset, can support up to four GPU's per system, such as two of the ATI Radeon HD 3870 X2 graphics cards. This enthusiast PC platform, codenamed “Spider,” energizes the latest PC gaming titles, speeds up high-definition video playback, and delivers amazing performance for advanced productivity and multi-tasking. This platform is also loaded with powerful performance and features the next-generation HyperTransport 3.0 and energy-efficient innovations like Cool'n'Quiet 2.0 technology.

DirectX 10 game compatibility allows even casual gamers to enjoy an enhanced gaming experience, such as lifelike 3D graphics and dynamic interactivity in the latest game titles. This technology harnesses the graphics power of both an ATI discrete graphics card, such as the ATI Radeon 3450, and the integrated motherboard GPU.

AMD Phenom X3 processors bring multi-core technology to a broader audience in search of desktop PCs that can handle digital entertainment workloads. When paired with the AMD 780 series chipset, AMD Phenom X3 processors can deliver significant enhancements in gaming and in bringing high-definition experiences to mainstream gamers.
