Indian telecom operator Aircel has announced that it has tied up with the Canada-based Research In Motion (RIM) to launch BlackBerry services for its customers in India.
According to a press release from Aircel, the company will offer an array of BlackBerry smartphones and services for businesses customers and individual customers in all the circles in India where Aircel operates.
Aircel said it will “leverage its strong local presence” as well as Redington’s retail distribution channel to provide BlackBerry services in India’s major cities, including Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi and Chennai as well as cities in the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
Customers of Aircel can select from a variety of BlackBerry phones such as Blackberry Bold 9000 Smartphone, Blackberry Pearl 8110, Blackberry Curve 8320 Smartphone, and Blackberry Curve 8900 Smartphone.
Aircel said it will offer BlackBerry Enterprise Server to corporate customers who manage their own email servers. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server software integrates with email clients such as Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino and Novell GroupWise and also provides advanced security and IT policy controls in order to enable secure, push-based wireless access to email and other corporate data.
In the press release, Aircel said it also offers BlackBerry Internet Service that has been designed for individuals and smaller businesses. The BlackBerry Internet Service allows customers to access as many as 10 supported corporate and personal email accounts – including the most popular ISP email accounts – from a BlackBerry smartphone.
Gurdeep Singh, chief operating officer of Aircel, said in the press release that the telecom company has gained “significant momentum” in expanding its operations in India.
The BlackBerry’s launch, he added, is of “strategic importance” for the growth of Aircel, and with a wide range of BlackBerry smartphones on the Aircel network, the company’s customers “can find the right model for their work needs as well as personal needs.”
Aircel said that users of BlackBerry services will get high-speed internet with EDGE technology while accessing websites including Yahoo Chat, Yahoo messenger and Makemytrip. The users also can download faster, zoom-in on content, set book marks, view history and full-screen pages.
