Acer has said that the company plans to release Android 3.0 Gingerbread tablets in 2011. The tablets will come in three sizes: 5, 7 and 10 inches.
Acer is currently in the process of determining whether to use a Qualcomm Snapdragon or Nvidia Tegra 2 processor on the device.
Currently, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 1 GHz processors are the most common in high-end smartphones. They are well-known for great power management. Nvidia Tegra on the other hand is famous for its graphics capabilities, which are the core strength of the company. However, both Qualcomm and Nvidia will introduce 1.2 GHz, 1.5 GHz and dual-core processors in the near future, so the company is probably also trying to determine exactly which processor to use in the upcoming Gingerbread tablets.
NVidia, on the other hand, has its Tegra 2 processors that are good at rendering graphics.
Acer is developing Android tablets with Compal Electronics and Quanta Computer, one of which will also manufactures the devices.
Acer’s Android 3.0 tablet devices broadly cover the range of most popular screen sizes among devices of this type. A 5-inch device is a bit larger than a smartphone, like the Dell Streak tablet.
The 10 inch device is a regular tablet, while the 7 inch device might be positioned primarily as an e-reader.
Google recently said that the current versions of Android are not optimized for tablets. Android 3.0 Gingerbread is believed to be meant for high-end smartphones and tablets.
