The hallowed babe has been born. Yes, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes on Tuesday finally brought a much-discussed, most-awaited baby into the world. TomKat, as they are better known, have a 7-pound, 7-ounce girl, 20 inches long, whom they have named Suri, according to Cruise spokesman Arnold Robinson. He further added, "Both mother and daughter are doing well."
The name Suri has its origins in Hebrew, meaning "princess," or in Persian, meaning "red rose," Robinson said. The baby was born in Los Angeles, but Robinson has not disclosed the exact location.
Suri is Holmes' first child and the first biological child of Cruise. Cruise has an adopted daughter and son from his marriage to Nicole Kidman.
Details of the birth, which was planned under the rules of the Church of Scientology as a silent procedure, weren't disclosed. TomKat's Beverly Hills home was surrounded by a dozen reporters and photographers. Security officers inside the compound videotaped the journalists. The gate was covered in black so no one would be able to peer in. A security guard at the gate refused to release any information. Some cars were allowed into the estate, though.
Cruise and Holmes are not married and have yet to disclose a wedding date. They were first photographed together in Rome in April 2005. In June, Cruise announced that he had proposed to Holmes on the Eiffel tower. Since then Cruise has been overtly vocal about his love for Holmes. Some would say he has been making a royal fool of himself, jumping up and down on Oprah's couch declaring his love.
