Former ACP RP Thyagi gets death sentence

Convicted for the custodial death of two people when he was ASI.

No one is above the law was the theme of he day for Delhi cops as a trial court in the capital awarded death sentence to former assistant police commissioner (ACP) R P Tyagi. The sentence comes following the senior police officer’s conviction for the custodial death of two people in 1987. 

Apart from Tyagi, two other officers, including another assistant police commissioner have also been convicted. While assistant police commissioner K P Singh has been sentenced to one year rigourous imprisonment, sub-inspector Tej Singh has been given three years rigourous imprisonment. They have also been slapped with Rs 25,000 fine each respectively for dereliction of duty, tampering with records and for attempting to shield the guilty. 

It may be recalled that R P Tyagi had served as the station house officer of the Vivek Vihar Police Station in Delhi in 1987 when the incident took place. Two men, Ram Kumar and Mahendra, who were in custody are believed to have been tortured by the accused on the night of August 16, 1987 and subsequently died. Kumar and Mahendra were arrested by the police in a case of causing minor injuries to a couple. 

Post pronouncement of the sentence, R P Tyagi’s lawyer sad that he would now move the High Court for all the three accused.
