PRESIDENT KALAM TALKS TO KIDS IN IMPHAL

Politics not for kids, says Kalam

BY OUR CORRESPONDENT
October 16 2006

Politics is not kids play, the school students of a Manipur school were told. The advice came from none other than President Abdul Kalam.

For students, their first job is to study well and excel. Politics can wait. Stay away from politics while pursuing education, was what Kalam had to tell the kids in the north eastern state. Elaborating on what he thought, Kalam said that corruption can be removed only by three people - the father, the mother and the elementary school teacher.

Later on speaking to college students at the 10th convocation of the Manipur University, the President stressed the need for tapping the rich biodiversity in the northeast for rapid industrialisation and creating employments. According to Kalam, Manipur should aim to have a pharmaceutical company. This would help in providing employment opportunities to our youths and give fillip to industrialisation in the state.

Earlier President Kalam landed in the city of Imphal even as a total general strike to protest the continuance of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act that gives the army unlimited powers to deal with militancy, was being observed. Urging students and teachers at the university to carry out focused research on ways to boost border trade between the northeast and South Asian nations, Kalam said research work aimed at creating a wealth of useful data in evaluating trade prospects in select sectors so as to enhance economic opportunities for the people ought to be encouraged.
